Are experts from the educational, health and social sector already sensitised for young carers? The first Swiss-wide and representative survey delivers answers.
Results of the survey among experts
Professionals from the educational, health and social sector in Switzerland still are little familiar with the phenomenon of young carers. This was revealed by a nationwide online survey conducted as part of the research project "Children, young people and young adults as carers in Switzerland", which was conducted under the then programme management of Prof. Dr. iur. Agnes Leu and her team from the Careum School of Health. All together 3518 professionals have taken part in the survey. 56 percent of it knew no technical terms to the description of children, adolescents and young adults providing care and support for relatives.
The participants of the survey judged an anonymous first point of contact, specified experts for young carers and young adult carers as well as concrete support at home as especially sensible support measures for affected children, adolescents and young adults. The professionals themselves wish to have a specified office for young carers and young adult carers as well as more information about them. The results of the survey together with the knowledge from national and international projects form the basis for practically oriented recommendations for professionals and for continuing political measures in Switzerland. Careum School of Health has summarised the survey results with graphics in German and French.
